Jonathan Alexander

Jonathan Alexander is a three-time recipient of the Ellen Nold Award for Best Articles in the field of Computers and Composition Studies. In 2011, he was awarded the Charles Moran Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field of Computers and Writing Studies. From 2010-2013, Alexander was named a UCI Chancellor’s Fellow in recognition of his scholarly achievements. In 2016, he was named a Chancellor’s Professor. In 2023, he received the Conference on College Composition and Communication Exemplar Award in recognition of career achievements.

Alexander works under the rubric of “writing studies” to explore the creation and uptake of “texts” as they perform different kinds of ideological work in specific contexts. His work has primarily focused on written and digital production in the extra-curriculum, such as self- and collectively-sponsored multimodal forms of composition, including “fan texts.” More recently, he has turned his attention to many varied forms of life narrative as a rich mode of rhetorical and political engagement.

Alexander also writes memoir and creative nonfiction. His critical memoir, Creep: A Life, a Theory, and Apology, was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award in 2018. Stroke Book: The Diary of a Blindspot was published by Fordham University Press in October 2021, and the sequel to Creep, Bullied: The Story of an Abuse, was published in late 2021 as well. Dear Queer Self, a memoir-as-novel, appeared in March 2022 from Acre Books.
