ICS 192 – Internship Course, CPT & OPT

In order to be eligible to enroll in ICS 192, students:

• Must be in good academic standing and not on probation
• May not be pursuing employment (paid or unpaid) elsewhere
• Must agree to submit a final report and supporting paperwork by the required deadlines
• May not enroll in ICS 192 more than 4 times while enrolled at UCI (if an ICS student wants to enroll after their 4th time, they would need to be approved by the Associate Dean to enroll in CS 199).
• The internship must be related to the student’s major

Domestic students who want to enroll in ICS 192 must submit these materials to ucounsel@uci.edu before the deadline:

• ICS 192 Enrollment Application Form
• Job Offer Letter with the following information:
  – Company’s letterhead
  – Be addressed to you
  – Job title
  – Job description
  – Location of employment
  – Specify if work is part-time/full-time
  – Specify the exact start and end date of employment
  – Employer’s signature

International students may be eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT), a type of employment authorization that allows students to complete an internship. During the academic year, international students are allowed to work only part-time, but they can go full-time in the Summer Session.

International students who need to enroll in ICS 192 must submit these materials to ucounsel@uci.edu before the deadline:

• CPT application: In the email, confirm your expected date of graduation (quarter/year). This will need to be signed by an ICS advisor and returned to the International Center for final review.
• ICS 192 Enrollment Application Form
• Job Offer Letter with the following information:
  – Company’s letterhead
  – Be addressed to you
  – Job title
  – Job description
  – Location of employment
  – Specify if work is part-time/full-time
  – Specify the exact start and end date of employment (The internship must begin on or after “quarter start date” and must end on or before the “quarter end date,” so review the UCI Academic Calendar to determine the dates of CPT for the quarter which you are applying)
  – Employer’s signature

International students may be eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. OPT provides the opportunity to gain employment experience in the student’s major/field of study.

The OPT I-20 Request Form is required as part of the OPT application package. Please email ucounsel@uci.edu by Spring quarter to have an ICS counselor verify your graduation date and sign it.
